Cardio Health Better with FYM-style Training

............Without Long Hours of Cardio!

Yet another way Fit Yummy Mummy is changing the lives of women.

"In the spring, my sister and I schedule all of our summer hikes so I can coordinate time off from work. She’s an artist so she’s flexible. She also lives in Santa Fe which naturally gives Ana Maria an advantage when it comes to our high altitude hikes.

Typically, we hike from 7000 to 12000 ft. Santa Fe is already at 7000 ft so Ana Maria’s O2 capacity is already acclimated to those altitudes. I live at 4000 ft so come March; my cardiovascular training ramps up so I can be ready for our first hike. (I’m 7 years younger and I refuse to be gasping for air when she is not.) Usually I am very well prepared and she is gasping for air while I patiently wait for her to catch up.

But I returned to school this past year and I just couldn’t keep up with my training sessions. In fact, I had not trained since August of 2007. It was now April and I had only 8 weeks left before our first hike. And, I was still in school so I still couldn’t find the time to get back to the gym.

I chose to use Craig Ballentyne’s Turbulence Training which consisted of bodyweight training (no need for the gym) followed by high intensity interval training. I was also running 7-10 miles on my off days and hiking with 40 lbs on my back every weekend. I only had 8 weeks so I knew I had to work hard.

By the time our first hike came around, I felt ready. The hike which was a little “gaspy” last year was almost “easy” this year.

But, I was still worried about training once school started back up. I found Fit Yummy Mummy through Craig and thought I could learn how to better manage my time.

I put a lot of trust in what Holly taught and I jumped in.

I stuck with the training as outlined in the book with just an added hike here and there to keep me used to the weight on my back.

It’s now been 6 weeks of no drawn out cardio runs. Out of curiosity, I went for a quick 3 mile run just to see how it felt.

What a surprise!

Even though I was feeling a little bit of soreness from my last training session (reverse lunges, ugh!), I felt really GOOD! My breathing was hard but never felt forceful. My legs felt solid and light. Right in the middle I had to stop to get the stitch on my side worked out, but I started back up and the stitch never returned.

I felt I was running fast but didn’t realize how fast till I saw that I did 8 minute miles! That was the best time I’ve ever had. It could have been even faster if it wasn’t for that side stitch.

I’m FOREVER indebted to you Holly for teaching me how to train efficiently!"
